Bitcoin Is Stuck Near $83K While Corporations Keep Buying

Bitcoin is trading near $83,000 this weekend, rejected from the $86,000–$90,000 resistance zone after failing to hold a recent push higher. The technical picture is murky. The Coinbase Premium Index has turned negative, signaling weaker spot buying demand or stronger selling pressure from U.S.-based investors relative to global markets. That gap between on-chain accumulation and price is the story worth watching into next week.

Who Is Actually Buying

Following a price drop on October 7, blockchain data showed medium and large wallets accumulated approximately 15,000 BTC worth about $1.24 billion. At the same time, mining firm MARA Holdings moved 996 BTC worth about $81 million on October 9 to an address tied to Galaxy Digital. On-chain data alone does not confirm the coins were sold, and MARA did not publicly describe the transfer as a debt-repayment sale. One group is accumulating on weakness; the other is moving coins in size. That divergence defines the current market.

On the corporate treasury side, the numbers are striking. A River Financial report published October 8 said businesses added 193,000 Bitcoin in 2026 as of October 8, lifting corporate holdings to 1.64 million BTC, with Strategy and Strive accounting for about 197,000 BTC combined. Strategy alone held about 848,000 BTC as of early October 2026.

Strive has been the more aggressive buyer. The firm bought 2,000 BTC for roughly $169 million between September 28 and October 2, its largest purchase since June, bringing total holdings to 29,462 BTC worth roughly $2.55 billion. The acquisition was funded largely through SATA preferred stock, and warrant exercises added $56.7 million. Strive currently ranks among the largest public corporate Bitcoin holders, behind Strategy, Twenty One Capital, Metaplanet, and MARA.

The Supply Squeeze and Its Limits

Since the April 2024 halving, BitcoinTreasuries.net said companies it tracks have acquired BTC at a pace that frequently exceeds new mining output, accumulating at about 2.8 times the rate at which new coins entered circulation through mining. That math is structurally bullish. But the price does not confirm it yet, and that gap demands an explanation.

Part of the answer sits with short-term holders. Reports about U.S. government wallet movements and their impact vary by dataset and methodology, and this note does not have a primary on-record confirmation for the specific step-by-step figures cited in the draft. What matters for traders is the mechanism: sudden, large transfers or sale expectations can act as a catalyst when profits are elevated and short-term holders are already leaning toward distribution.

Short-term holders carry an average cost basis around $74,100, according to CryptoQuant’s short-term holder cost basis metrics. If Bitcoin falls below that level, the cohort flips to aggregate unrealized loss, which historically accelerates exchange inflows and adds selling pressure. That level is the number to watch if yields keep climbing.

The Dollar You Saved in 2000 Buys About 51 Cents Today.

It now takes about $1.95 to buy what one dollar bought in 2000, so the dollar you set aside then has the purchasing power of roughly 51 cents today. Gold pays no dividend. Regulation Changes the Backdrop

The regulatory environment shifted materially this week. On October 5, the CFTC released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking public comment on a comprehensive, tailored framework for retail commodity transactions involving crypto assets under the Commodity Exchange Act. Together, CFTC rulemaking and SEC actions suggest agencies may keep building the rulebook in pieces while comprehensive legislation remains uncertain.

The CLARITY Act, which would have established a federal digital-asset framework, stalled in the Senate in mid-September amid disputes over official conflicts of interest and other objections. The practical upshot is that the CFTC rulemaking process, not Congress, is likely to be a key near-term driver of regulatory clarity for crypto market structure.

Key Levels and What Comes Next

  • $86,000–$90,000: Resistance zone Bitcoin failed to clear this month. A clean break higher is needed to shift near-term momentum.
  • $80,000: First meaningful support. A break below opens a test of the $75,000–$78,000 demand zone.
  • $74,100: Short-term holder average cost. Closing below this flips roughly 3.94 million BTC into aggregate loss territory.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached 5.31% in early October, near its highest level since 2002, increasing pressure on risk assets including Bitcoin. Corporate buyers are absorbing supply at a pace that has no recent precedent. Whether that structural demand can overpower rate pressure before short-term holders lose their nerve is the trade Bitcoin is setting up right now.
