EWZ Is Up About 20% This Year. Here Is What Drives the Return.

Brazil’s stock market just lapped the Nasdaq, and most investors still aren’t paying attention. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) is up about 20% on the year, ahead of the Nasdaq-100’s roughly 17% year-to-date advance (through the September 3 close). That gap is not a rounding error. It is a signal worth taking seriously.

The surface story is a commodity-and-politics cocktail. Brazil’s benchmark Ibovespa finished September 3 essentially flat, down 0.01% at 185,188 points, a level not seen in nearly four months. A local poll showing President Lula statistically tied with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro for the 2026 election lowered fear of an abrupt policy shift, while the Brazilian real strengthened 0.9% the prior session and the dollar ended September 3 near unchanged in Brazil. Options traders are piling in, placing unusually big bets on EWZ that lean bullish.

But here is what most of the excitement misses: for a U.S. investor owning EWZ, the Brazilian real decides a large share of the actual return. The fund collects dividends from underlying companies in Brazilian reais, converts proceeds to dollars, and passes the rest along. The distribution is whatever Brazilian corporate boards decide to send out, translated through the BRL/USD rate. When the real weakens 10%, every dollar payout shrinks in lockstep, regardless of what the Ibovespa does. That mechanic has burned investors before. It is also what makes the current moment more interesting than a simple index comparison suggests.

What Is Inside EWZ

The top holdings are Petrobras, Vale, Nu Holdings, and Itaú Unibanco, with weights that move around from day to day. The portfolio concentrates in three sectors: financials, energy, and materials. That concentration is both the fund’s engine and its risk. Petrobras needs sustained oil price strength to maintain the earnings momentum that has made it a dividend engine for the fund. Vale needs Chinese steel demand to recover enough to justify a valuation that has already run ahead of the underlying commodity. Neither of those conditions is guaranteed.

The Election Variable

A September 3 PoderData poll put Flávio Bolsonaro at 45% to Lula’s 44% in a simulated runoff. Both gaps sit inside the margin of error. After Quaest showed Bolsonaro closing on Lula, the real gained and the Ibovespa rallied. One trader told local media the market favors “the candidacy that is not Lula’s.” Markets are treating a Bolsonaro win as a pro-business outcome, particularly for energy and fiscal policy. The first round is October 4, with a runoff on October 25 if no candidate clears 50%.

The Rate Backdrop

Brazil’s central bank has been cutting the Selic, and it was reduced to 14.00% in August. With inflation expectations still elevated, the ex-ante real interest rate remains among the highest in the world. That real yield is what helps keep the Brazilian real from collapsing even as cuts proceed. A double-digit Selic keeps the real among the world’s preferred carry currencies, which cushions any slide.

How to Think About Owning This

EWZ fits in a portfolio as diversified international exposure with a commodity overlay. A reasonable starting position is 3 to 5% of a broadly diversified portfolio, with the understanding that election outcome and real direction are the two variables to monitor weekly through October 25. With the October 4 election approaching, investors are still demanding a premium for Brazilian assets until the next government’s budget arithmetic is knowable. That premium creates the opportunity. It also sets the exit trigger: if a Lula win triggers real weakness, EWZ’s dollar return will lag the Ibovespa significantly.

The lesson here is straightforward. When a foreign market outperforms, the index is only half the story. The currency is the other half. Brazil’s rally is real and worth owning. Just know which bet you are actually making.
