Etsy Is Getting Re-Rated on AI. Here Is the Case for Buying It Now.

Etsy spent two years wearing the scarlet letter of a pandemic winner gone stale. The re-rating that started quietly in May is now loud enough to demand a closer look.

Oppenheimer upgraded the stock to Outperform from Perform and set a $90 price target, implying about 21% upside from Monday’s close. Analyst Jason Helfstein tied the move to AI search benefits, product improvements, and app engagement and conversion. Shares climbed about 2.9% in Tuesday’s premarket session, extending year-to-date gains to roughly 34%.

The Business

Etsy operates a leading global marketplace connecting roughly 87 million active buyers and about 6 million active sellers of unique, handmade, and vintage goods. Its competitive position was always its differentiation from Amazon and eBay: buyers come for something specific and personal, not just cheap. The problem from 2022 onward was that those buyers stopped coming back as often. What is changing now is that AI may be fixing exactly that.

CEO Kruti Patel Goyal said during the second-quarter earnings call that the company is applying artificial intelligence in three distinct ways: making Etsy more personal, making discovery easier, and streamlining the seller listings process. Q2 2026 delivered accelerated Etsy marketplace GMS growth and revenue growth, with improved profitability, supported by investments in discovery, personalization, and marketing efficiency.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

The analyst cluster around $90 is notable because it emerged from three different angles over eight days. Argus raised its price target on Etsy from $67 to $89 while maintaining a Buy rating, citing improving active-buyer trends and higher gross merchandise sales per buyer. Bernstein held its ground at Hold. Then Oppenheimer moved, and the argument shifted from GMV recovery to something more durable.

Oppenheimer said its consumer work points to more direct navigation to Etsy’s site and app, and Helfstein concluded that product improvements are working, giving Etsy a stronger moat and less dependence on Google Search. That last point matters. As generative AI reshapes how people discover products, a platform buyers navigate directly is meaningfully less exposed to search engine traffic risk than a marketplace that leans heavily on search-driven discovery.

The seller side also got a quiet upgrade this month. Remitly Global announced on September 9 that it has partnered with Etsy to be an additional payment provider on Etsy Payments in 15 countries, with new international sellers able to choose Remitly as their payout provider during onboarding. Easier cross-border payouts mean more international supply on the platform, which broadens inventory and feeds the discovery engine.

What’s Driving the Opportunity

Oppenheimer lifted its fiscal 2026 GMS forecast modestly and valued Etsy at 12 times 2027 EBITDA. It framed that multiple as a discount to eBay. The discount is the opportunity. If AI search genuinely improves conversion rather than merely moving eyeballs around, Etsy’s EBITDA estimates are conservative. Helfstein also argued that current assumptions do not require meaningfully better app performance for the thesis to work, leaving room for estimates to move higher if app conversion improves.

The 52-week range runs from $44 to $87.97. Etsy is trading near $74 today, well below the prior high and well below every analyst target in the bullish camp.

What Could Go Wrong

The bear case is simple and honest: the whole thesis rests on a conversion improvement that has not yet shown up at scale in reported GMS. The key risk is that AI features do not drive buyer conversion and the $90 target never materializes. Executive Chair Josh Silverman sold shares at about $82 in early September, a contrasting signal that long-term holders should not ignore. Bernstein’s Hold reflects a camp that wants proof, not projections. And broader macro pressure on discretionary spending, particularly in Etsy’s core categories of home goods, jewelry, and apparel, could weigh on GMS regardless of how well the search algorithm performs.

The Bottom Line

This is not a momentum trade on a hot sector. It is a re-rating thesis on a company whose core problem, buyer discovery and conversion, may be getting fixed by the same technology reshaping every other consumer platform. The math at 12 times 2027 EBITDA, at a discount to eBay, with three analysts near $90 and a Bernstein Hold as the lone dissent, suggests the market has not fully priced the upside if the AI execution holds. The risk is that it does not. For investors willing to own that uncertainty, ETSY at $74 is the most asymmetric consumer internet setup available today.
