Robert Half Is Up 22%. The Hard Part Starts Now.

For most of 2026, Wall Street has been debating whether AI is structurally dismantling white-collar employment or merely reshaping it. Robert Half just handed that argument its most concrete counter-data point yet.

Why This Stock Now

On October 23, RHI closed nearly 22% higher at $45.87 on trading volume more than triple the recent average. The catalyst was straightforward: net income per share in Q3 came in at $0.49, up 14% from $0.43 a year ago, marking the first year-over-year increase in quarterly EPS since 2022. That EPS beat the $0.47 consensus by $0.02. But the real shock was not the earnings beat itself.

The Business

Robert Half operates two segments. Talent Solutions places contract and permanent workers, primarily in finance, accounting, technology, and administrative roles. Protiviti is the firm’s business consulting arm, focused on risk, compliance, and regulatory work. Talent Solutions posted 2% adjusted revenue growth in Q3, its first positive year-over-year comparison since 2022. That one data point rewrites the story that has weighed on this stock for three years.

Permanent Placement revenue rose 6% year-over-year. Technology remained the strongest-performing practice group within Contract Talent Solutions, while finance and accounting returned to year-over-year growth. Meanwhile, Talent Solutions adjusted operating income reached $36 million, up roughly 50% from a year earlier.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

Analyst reactions are mixed, which is actually informative. Several firms lifted price targets while keeping more cautious ratings, and published targets generally lagged where the stock was trading after the move. That gap tells you the market moved faster than analysts were prepared for.

For Q4, management guided to adjusted revenue growth of 3% at the midpoint for Talent Solutions, with Protiviti also expected to improve. At the midpoint, EPS guidance is $0.41, which implies roughly 30% year-over-year growth, supported by expected growth in both Talent Solutions and Protiviti plus ongoing cost actions.

What’s Driving the Opportunity

The structural argument for Robert Half is not simply that hiring is recovering. It is that AI, ironically, may be driving demand for the firm’s specialized recruiters rather than eliminating them. In Robert Half research on 2026 tech and IT hiring trends, 78% of tech leaders said they plan to increase full-time headcount in the second half of 2026.

Adjusted operating margin expanded to 5.3% of revenue, up from 4.5% a year ago. That kind of margin expansion on modest growth is the signature of a business whose cost structure is tightening while the cycle turns. The combination of operating leverage and a demand inflection is what made Friday’s report land the way it did.

What Could Go Wrong

Here is the honest version. Protiviti revenue declined about 3% on an adjusted basis in Q3, even as its adjusted gross margin improved to 24.1% from 23.0%. The consulting segment remains a drag on the top line. More pressing is the valuation: after a 22% single-day move, the stock is no longer priced like an overlooked recovery story. A recovery priced for perfection leaves little room if Q4 hiring trends stall or if Protiviti disappoints again.

The Bottom Line

Robert Half delivered the cleanest earnings event in the staffing sector in years: an EPS beat, the first Talent Solutions growth since 2022, margin expansion, and a Q4 guide that implies 30% earnings growth at the midpoint. The business inflection is real and supported by hard data. The stock move, however, has now absorbed a significant portion of that good news in a single session. Chasing a 22% gap at a premium multiple is a different risk proposition than buying an overlooked recovery story. The compelling thesis here is watching for the first meaningful pullback, which would restore the reward side of an equation the market has already shifted sharply in one direction.
