Open your retirement statement and read it as a list of promises rather than a list of assets. The shift is uncomfortable, and it is accurate.

Every line is somebody else’s obligation

A stock is a claim on a company’s future. A bond is a promise from a borrower. Cash in the account is a liability of a bank. An annuity is a contract with an insurer. A fund share is a claim on a sponsor who holds claims on other people. At every level, somebody else has to perform.

In normal years that is invisible and nobody should lose sleep over it. In 2008 it was not invisible. Firms that had stood for a century needed rescuing in a weekend, and holders of paper spent that weekend finding out exactly whose promise they were relying on.

Physical gold is the exception in a retirement account. There is no issuer behind it and no earnings to miss. Inside a self-directed IRA the metal is titled to your account and held in an IRS-approved depository, insured and audited.2 It is not a position on a screen that references something elsewhere. It is a specific quantity of metal, allocated to you.

It also behaves differently from the rest of the statement, which is the point of holding any of it. Central banks have been adding more than a thousand tons a year1 – institutions with every tool of modern finance available to them, choosing the one asset that predates all of it.

Nobody sensible puts everything in metal. The question worth answering is whether 100% of your retirement should depend on counterparties performing. The free 2026 Gold IRA Guide walks through exactly how a rollover from an IRA, 401(k) or TSP works, which metals the IRS allows, how insured depository storage works, and the mistakes that cost retirees the most. It is free and it takes about thirty seconds to request.

FedEx Lost 667 Pilots. Its Autonomous Aircraft Partner Flew Without One.

FedEx shed 667 pilots over the past year, a 13.2% decline in its flight crew tied to the loss of its U.S. Postal Service air cargo contract and an ongoing restructuring push. That number sits inside a broader industry problem: Oliver Wyman has projected the U.S. pilot shortfall would reach 24,000 positions in 2026, with cargo operators sharing the pain alongside regional passenger carriers.

What makes FedEx’s position worth watching now is that its middle-mile autonomous aircraft partner is no longer in a lab. Elroy Air completed the first autonomous and uncrewed flights authorized under the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program in 2026, operating its Chaparral hybrid-electric VTOL cargo aircraft across Gulf Coast energy corridors in Louisiana, with plans to expand across parts of Texas and Mississippi. The aircraft is designed to carry up to 300 pounds of cargo up to 300 miles, lift vertically without a runway, and pick up pre-loaded pods autonomously. No pilot on board, no airport required.

The chip inside the hull may matter as much as the airframe. Neuromorphic processors are now entering defense procurement contracts as the solution to onboard autonomy without a persistent uplink.

In July, Elroy Air added three unattended delivery modes under a U.S. Army contract, including precision airdrops during forward flight and full ground delivery without personnel at the receiving site. The demonstrations were described as autonomous, but the company has not said they required zero operator input mid-flight. Production manufacturing has been handed to Kratos Defense, but Elroy has not disclosed a $200 million joint venture in Abu Dhabi targeting scale by 2028, and it has not publicly confirmed an order book of over 1,500 units committed.

This is the angle most FDX coverage misses. The autonomous middle-mile conversation keeps getting framed as a future technology story. It is now an operational one. The regulatory ceiling, not the aircraft, is what separates today’s corridor tests from FedEx’s sortation network.

That ceiling is real. The FAA provides a running list of companies authorized to conduct package delivery by drone under Part 135, and every route still requires individual approval. Drones that weigh 55 pounds or more fall outside Part 107, and operators may need a type certificate and/or special authorization before commercial service can begin. Elroy Air’s participation in the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program provides a direct FAA collaboration channel, which matters more than most investors appreciate: it is one of the most direct federal pathways currently available for heavy-payload uncrewed logistics demonstrations.

FDX itself is in a transition year. Full-year fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings came in at $20.24 per share, above its own guidance range, but the calendar 2026 outlook of $16.90 to $18.10 per share landed well below the Wall Street consensus cited in many previews. The stock trades at about 16.8 times estimated 2026 earnings, below the sector median but above its own five-year average. Analysts expect earnings per share to fall roughly 13% this year before recovering toward $19.61 in fiscal 2027.

The pilot attrition and the autonomous aircraft timeline are not separate stories. FedEx is paying premium compensation to hire 800 or more pilots in 2026 while its middle-mile autonomous partner completes federally authorized uncrewed corridor runs. Every quarter that FAA certification does not arrive is a quarter where labor cost stays elevated. Traders watching FDX this week should note that October 28 brings the company’s next earnings report. The pilot math is the number underneath the number.
