Market Snapshot
Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals after a hacking incident estimated at about $6.3 billion, disclosing the breach Thursday evening and pausing withdrawals shortly after the incident came to light. Approximately $6.36 billion in digital assets were moved from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, with most transferred within about 20 minutes. The total is more than four times the previous record, a roughly $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025.
Bitcoin remained below $80,000 as traders responded to the breach and a wave of forced position closures, trading near $78,000. BTC dipped as low as the mid-$76,000s during the session but later recovered above $78,000. Ether fell about 5% to around $2,200, while BNB slid roughly 7%. Crypto market liquidations exceeded $1.5 billion in 24 hours.
Stocks in Focus
- BNB: Binance’s own token fell sharply after news of the hot-wallet drain. BNB is the most direct proxy for exchange-level damage and will remain under pressure until withdrawal access is restored.
- COIN (Coinbase): Coinbase is the obvious beneficiary if traders migrate assets off Binance to regulated alternatives. Watch for elevated volume at the open.
- CRCL (Circle): Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said Circle froze more than $800 million in USDC in coordination with law enforcement. That response demonstrates Circle’s institutional utility but also underscores how much stablecoin exposure ran through one exchange.
The Frozen Funds Math
Tether said it froze more than 1.5 billion USDT and Circle said it froze more than $800 million in USDC, roughly $2.3 billion in total. Binance has said the current verified total frozen on-chain is around $3 billion, and that figure may continue to rise as tracing progresses. That still leaves a substantial gap.
Based on Binance’s estimate of roughly $6.3 billion impacted and about $3 billion frozen, around $3.3 billion would remain unfrozen. Binance has said it will cover all losses using its SAFU fund and company resources. Binance also said its initial investigation suggests a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop may have enabled an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
Technical Radar
US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted fresh inflows while $80,000 remains the immediate resistance level for BTC. Above that, the next target is the $82,000 zone, which capped bounces in the second half of October. On the downside, Bitcoin fell as low as the mid-$76,000s before recovering toward $78,000, establishing that area as the line traders will watch if selling resumes.
Risk Radar
- Withdrawal backlog: Key indicators to watch are how quickly Binance resumes withdrawals and whether outflows remain orderly. A disorderly reopening could send BTC back toward $76,000.
- North Korea link: Blockchain analytics firms have said the attack appears linked to a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group. That attribution matters for sanctions compliance across every exchange holding assets connected to the hack.
- Contagion to smaller exchanges: Massive attacks can leave smaller exchanges vulnerable to collapse due to the potential for panicked withdrawals.
The Cheat Sheet
- Top Market Theme: The world’s largest crypto exchange has withdrawals paused, and every price in crypto is reset around one question: how fast does Binance reopen?
- Asset to Watch: BNB. It is the direct bet on Binance’s balance-sheet health, and it has the farthest to fall if the SAFU fund proves insufficient.
- Sector to Watch: Regulated crypto infrastructure. COIN and CRCL both benefit if institutional capital treats the Binance freeze as a reason to relocate.
- Biggest Risk: A slow or chaotic withdrawal resumption triggers a second wave of liquidations. The $76,000 area is where that trade gets tested.
- Biggest Opportunity: BTC near $78,000 with ETF inflows intact. If Binance confirms a clear reopening timeline Friday, that is a relief-trade plan across crypto majors.
- One Thing to Remember: The key number is the gap between what was taken and what has been frozen. Binance has put the verified frozen total around $3 billion versus about $6.3 billion impacted, leaving a gap near $3.3 billion. Watch that gap narrow or widen as frozen-fund tallies update through the morning session.
